Patios, Walls & Outdoor Living in Gentry, AR
Patios, retaining walls, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, pools and walkways built across Gentry by one team, on one schedule, for ground that freezes and thaws.
Built by one team, about twenty-five minutes away
Gentry is a railroad and orchard town in western Benton County. It grew along the Kansas City Southern line in the 1890s as a shipping point for apples, was briefly called Orchard, and turned to poultry when the apple trade faded. Today it is a small town with a real downtown, newer houses on its edges, and farmland and acreage all around it.
Highway 12 runs straight from Cave Springs through Highfill to Gentry, so it is closer in practice than it looks on a map. The work here splits the way the town does. In town it is patios, covers and outdoor kitchens on ordinary lots; out on the acreage it is pavilions, long walkways and outdoor rooms placed where the land actually suits them.
The one thing to know before anyone gives you a price is the address problem. 72734 covers Gentry, Highfill and a lot of countryside between them, so a Gentry address tells you almost nothing about whose rules apply. The parcel does.

What is under Gentry
Gentry sits on the Springfield Plateau, and that decides more about your project than any material you pick.
You are on the Springfield Plateau here, which means the Boone Formation is under you: Mississippian limestone interbedded with chert. Where the limestone has dissolved out, what is left behind is red clay full of chert fragments, and where it has not, rock turns up a foot down when the plan said three. That is a karst landscape, so sinkholes, springs and voids are all normal features of it rather than surprises.
What it means for your project is that excavation is the line on the quote most likely to be wrong. Hitting rock changes the method, not just the hours, and a contractor who priced a flat dig and then finds chert at eight inches has two choices, and only one of them is telling you. It also means drainage has to be designed rather than assumed: water in a karst landscape finds a route, and if the route runs under your new patio you will find out in the second year.
The City of Gentry issues its own building permits and runs them through an online permit portal. City Hall is at 101 West Main Street, and the Building Inspector is on 479-736-2555. The city's published pages do not list which backyard projects need a permit, so for a cover, a pool or anything carrying gas or power, confirm with the Building Inspector on 479-736-2555 before it is designed. We do that as part of the quote.
Outside the Gentry city limits, and that is a lot of the 72734 ZIP, it becomes a Benton County matter. Outside the city limits it is unincorporated Benton County, where Building Safety (479-271-1003) has not required building permits for detached Group U structures since November 2023. Pools, anything attached to the house and new plumbing, electrical or gas work still need permits, pool fencing still has to meet code, and the county still wants a site plan review through its Planning Office.

Gentry is about twenty-five minutes from our yard in Cave Springs, near the old railroad downtown, SWEPCO Lake and Wild Wilderness Drive-Through Safari. That closeness is deliberate: we stay inside roughly twenty-five miles so that being on site the same day is a normal thing rather than a favour.

Do you build in Gentry?
Yes, across 72734. It is about twenty-five minutes from Cave Springs, most of it straight along Highway 12.
My address says Gentry. Is the city my permit office?
Only if you are inside the city limits. The 72734 ZIP also covers Highfill and a great deal of unincorporated Benton County, where the rules are completely different. We check the parcel first.
Do I need a permit for a covered patio in Gentry?
Inside the city, ask the Building Inspector on 479-736-2555; covered, attached or serviced structures are the usual trigger. Outside it, Benton County wants permits for anything attached to the house but not for a detached structure.
What works on acreage outside town?
Pavilions and outdoor rooms placed for the view and the evening sun, with a walkway solid enough to use in the wet. On a big lot, siting is the design.
Will you hit rock?
Possibly. Western Benton County is the same Boone limestone and chert as the rest of the plateau, and shallow rock is normal rather than bad luck.
Do you offer financing?
Yes, through Acorn Finance, who take you through the options directly.
