Rogers splits cleanly in two for our purposes. West of I-49 around Pinnacle Hills the lots are newer, flatter and more generous, and the work tends to be full outdoor living builds: a pool, a covered kitchen and the hardscape tying them together, all designed at once. East toward downtown and out toward Beaver Lake the ground starts moving, and retaining walls and terracing stop being decoration and start being the thing that makes the garden usable at all.
The lake side is where we do the most wall work anywhere in the region. A slope that looks gentle standing on it is rarely gentle once you put a level on it, and a garden cut into a hill without drainage behind the wall is a garden with a deadline.

What is under Rogers
Rogers sits on the Springfield Plateau, and that decides more about your project than any material you pick.
You are on the Springfield Plateau here, which means the Boone Formation is under you: Mississippian limestone interbedded with chert. Where the limestone has dissolved out, what is left behind is red clay full of chert fragments, and where it has not, rock turns up a foot down when the plan said three. That is a karst landscape, so sinkholes, springs and voids are all normal features of it rather than surprises.
What it means for your project is that excavation is the line on the quote most likely to be wrong. Hitting rock changes the method, not just the hours, and a contractor who priced a flat dig and then finds chert at eight inches has two choices, and only one of them is telling you. It also means drainage has to be designed rather than assumed: water in a karst landscape finds a route, and if the route runs under your new patio you will find out in the second year.
Rogers requires permits for a longer list than most of its neighbours. The city's Building Inspection office lists decks, covered patios, storage buildings, carports, fences over seven feet and swimming pools as all needing one, and applications go through the city's online permitting portal. The office is on 479-621-1100.
If the property is outside the Rogers city limits, the city has no jurisdiction and it goes to Benton County instead. Either way it is our paperwork, not yours.
